Flood v Drought

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, September 18, 2017 with No comments
So far this year Canberra has had only 254mm of rain which is devastatingly low. The last decent rainfall was on 21 May. Bring on spring rains! None forecast yet, but. Maybe this will help:

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 with No comments
On Thursday 7 September Rose Garden 200s, 12 on 2:30, were run by Brendan, Isaac, Jen, Dave and Giles. Please correct me if my memory is wrong! I jogged around while they were training..

On Thursday 12 October we will relocate for summer to Woden Athletics track. That's next month.

Sunday 9 September, while I was at Stromlo running 11k and enjoying new shoes, the spring sun and the company of many others returning to the great outdoors after a freezing winter, the trail group reports [Dave]:
What a great morning for the Speedygeese long run, although a little cold at the start at about 2 degrees. No wind or rain though, and it’s nice to get those rays of sun at this time of year to thaw out the frozen hands. Today’s run, courtesy of Sandeep, was a practice of the Bush Capital Half Marathon (according to the plan). 17 starters all up, including newcomers Matt and Pete (welcome guys).  😀
Everything started smoothly, other than Kerron and I turning up late to run a quick 8k with Giles before the others arrived. Obviously Giles’ patience is not as enduring as my capacity for being late. Giles did his own thing then met us later to finish with 14k before heading off for some urgent appointment.
There was another minor problem when Sandeep, who designed the course, had not arrived. His eventual arrival offered little “value add”, as it turned out he didn’t know the course. Apparently he thought Hackett and Ainslie were the same thing. Sandeep cleverly delegated to Giles, which was a great idea until Giles went home early – couldn’t hack it (sorry!).  😳
The course included a 15k loop of Mt Ainslie, which Sarah, Bron and Warrick completed to end up with 14k and 16k respectively. Pete and Matt ran unknown distances (if it’s not on Strava it didn’t happen?). Thach, Craig, Jen, Sarah and I set off at 5 minute km pace for the first 4k, which proved to be a bit fast for some, including me (so much for Jen’s mantra that long runs are supposed to be slow). Most of us apparently stuck together and finished the run almost as planned, if not exactly on course. Adrian looped back to pick up the tail runners and disappeared shortly after, according to unconfirmed reports. I decided to be the sweeper, with lots of starts and stops and running backward and forward.
Mhairi completed 20k, to find that her car was still intact, despite leaving the door wide open for a couple of hours at the shops. Apparently a few bogans enjoyed some fun inside it but obviously decided it wasn’t worth stealing. If you’re just after the insurance payout Mhairi, I can probably arrange something. I hope you didn’t use all the Valium.  😂 😂 😂
Jen and Thommo also did 20k, while Graeme, Narelle and Shiree did 21k. Shiree then went on, after a coffee break, to do the first 20k of the Sri Chinmoy 104 Leg 3. Obviously feeling guilty, she snuck in the remaining 5k after another short break – 46k all up.  😮 Sandeep added a couple of km and knocked over 23. With a warmup before the start, Kerron finished with 26k and Thach and I ended up with 30k. Adrian did 28k including running home. Monika apparently arrived late and did 21k on her own.
The best part, of course, was coffee and raisin toast (or something more substantial), especially the coffee lucky dip. I'm not sure whether it was the staff or just the difficult people they were serving.  🤣
Thanks Everyone. Next week is Goorooyarroo half marathon on Saturday, so Sunday might be a short one for most. Don’t forget free speedygeese speedwork sessions on Mondays and Thursdays at 5.30pm at Parliament House with Speedy Geoff Moore (winner of the 1978 Canberra marathon).  😮

Monday 11 September I couldn’t make it to Parliament House unfortunately, but 13 people could. Relay teams at the Rose Gardens consisted of Paul, Sarah, and Peter Burke; Jake (new), Dave and Jen; Rae, Vanessa and Ruth; Warrick, Thomas and Pieta, with Christopher allegedly supervising.

I got myself into a brand new Altra S3Sum this morning and I am pleased to find a running shoe that suits me, and is a step towards bare feet further down the track perhaps. It's light, flexible, low of heel, and didn't upset my ankles/calves in an easy 11k run on slightly undulating grass.

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, September 06, 2017 with No comments
On Thursday 31 August we ran Rose Garden 200s, 12 on 2:30. Participating were Brendan, Isaac, Jen, Dave, Monika (new) and me. Brownie was seen running there too.

Sunday 2 September,
while I was at Stromlo running only 5k because the changing rooms were locked and I had to return home afterwards, the trail group reports [Dave]:
With the house relocation out of the way, the trip to the coast over, and having almost recovered from the marathon effort of the City to Surf run report 3-part miniseries, it’s time to get this run report show on the road again. Thanks to Jen and Giles for the past two weeks’ reports.
The logistics were not so easy, given that the run was leg 3 of the Sri Chinmoy ultra, starting at the arboretum and ending at Dickson. Who was parking at the arbo? Who was parking at Dickson? Who was taking who to the arbo before the start and who was taking who back to the arbo at the end? However, Jen came to the rescue with hitherto unknown strategising skills involving what appeared to be lego people. 🤣 As a result, Mhairi found she could cope without the need for valium, even when Peter deviously took a selfie on black mountain and messaged everyone 10 minutes before the start, saying he was waiting at Black Mountain to start and asking where everyone was. 🤣
Light showers and some ominous clouds threatened the start, and the hands froze, but nothing could stop the gung-ho geese and friends. Newcomer Monika took the lead early and turned back after Black Mountain to finish with 19k. Narelle led the pack most of the rest of the way, as usual, while Adrian took it easy, given that he was planning to run 50k today. The rest of us did the best we could, struggling at times, with audible groans often coming from Mhairi’s direction. At the finish the weather had vastly improved.
In the end Narelle, Shiree, Pete and I finished with 26k, while Mhairi, Adam, Kristy, Elle and Jen completed around 25k. Adrian continued on…and on…and on.
For those doing the Canberra Times run, Jeff did 40:20, Sandeep 49:51 and Andrew finished with 1:08:45 for the 10k. Those who did the 14k included Jennie in 1:23:46, Bronwyn in 1:09:59 and Thomo as pacer par excellence in 1:09:58.
Meanwhile, for some unknown reason, Giles did a 25k from Kambah to Hackett and Thach did a half marathon around Coolemon Ridge. Speedy Geoff enjoyed a 5k at Stromlo Forest Park grass track and Andy J knocked out 8k somewhere on the north side.
Those of us not racing off to Fathers Day events (Jen and I) managed a coffee or two at the arbo. Pete was smart enough to mix running with pleasure by meeting his family for lunch at the arbo.
Thanks for the run everyone and thanks to Jen for organising the logistics. Thanks also to those whose photos I stole.

Monday 4 September was another snowy day at training. Christopher and I trotted around in the vicinity of Bronwyn, Dave and Sandeep who did just 4 x figure 8 loops on 5 minutes before the weather drove us back to our cars, and we drove home in near snow.

Live the passion, purpose and the person

Run Nation – we’ve selected the very best running films to leave your heart pounding and your mind mesmerised

Presented by Travelling Fit, our 2017 collection of original short films will focus on human-interest stories that use running as the medium of storytelling.

What is the why that makes these people push themselves to their physical limits and strive to be at the top of their game?

Two hours of heart-pounding races – you won’t break a sweat, but you may wipe a tear

From the elite experience through to ‘back of the pack’ runners, you’ll live the good, the bad and the painful. Because it’s more than just trails and tracks, roads and ultras; these are films that will inspire us all to pull on our sneakers and pound the pavement. Real life stories with heart, soul and passion that will leave you thinking, talking and dreaming.

Touring 14 venues nationally, so let’s run

The Film Festival begins touring nationally from June to November 2017. We’re looking for runners and fans to join us in major cities and regional centres to celebrate:. Coming up:

Thursday training during track season

The ACTMA track program has been published.
Track starts on 12 October and continues weekly.
All sessions are at Woden; I may attend some.
So the question is: do we want to continue with Thursday training at Parliament House?
On Thursday evenings, numbers have been fewer than expected.

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 with No comments
Last Thursday 24th I went out to a cold Parliament House and we ran Rose Garden 200s on 2:30. I recall - and my memory is suspect this long afterwards - that running on 2:30 were Giles, Isaac, Jen and Warrick.

Sunday 27th I was joined at Stromlo Forest Park by Warrick and Thomas, and we ran 10k together.

Also on Sunday 27th Giles reports: "In David Clarke's absence - I have taken on the role of writing the speedygeese long run report today.
True to form, numerous Canberra-based geese headed off this morning, including celebrity guests Shane Wright, his dog Scully, Jane Gordon and Belinda Seaman. Other attendees were Peter Brown, Pieta Smith, Lisa Charles, Adrian Cengia, Susan Sturgeon, Jen Bright and Thach Huynh.
This group, which included 4 people who work at Finance, successfully made it to Mt Majura summit with minimal directional issues but from there it got problematic.
"Anyway, half of us got ahead and then got behind - I can only presume that a wormhole in space-time opened up somewhere near the top of the mineshaft below Mt Majura at around 9am this morning. Numerous phone calls between Thach Huynh and Jen Bright failed to reunite the group, but somehow some of us made it back to coffee afterwards.
"Thach got 30k, the furthest of the lot of us; most of the rest of us got into the 20s.
"A good day - what was most encouraging is that even without Dave, we were most capable of getting lost."

Then on Monday 28th in excellent conditions at Parliament House despite freezing our socks off when it had dropped to 2 degrees with snow Sunday afternoon, we ventured down to the ramp at Reconciliation Place and ran 15 x ~160m on 2 minutes. Participating were Jen, Isaac, Bronwyn, Vamessa, Sarah, Paul, Warrick, Pieta, Christopher and me.

Another picture from Sunday. They are having too much fun.

Running in the snow

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, August 27, 2017 with No comments
Well this morning early Warrick, Thomas and I trained at Stromlo Forest Park and it was cool, still, and sunny. I am sure the runners at Goorooyarro and on the trails this morning experienced similar conditions. However by 1:30pm or so the temperature at my home in Holt dropped to 2 degrees, light hail started to fall, and then snow was blowing around although melting on the ground.

Leonie Doyle though was training at Mt Rob Roy in the early afternoon and this is what she described as blizzard conditions.

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 with 3 comments

A small group met at Parliament House on Thursday to run some longer intervals... 4 x 600 (300) + 2 x 200 (200)... and on Sunday I ran at Stromlo Forest Park... I am not sure why numbers are down this year? Back at Parliament House, Monday’s training saw Bronwyn, Pieta, Kym and Isaac run some killer hills …. We may move away from the hills next week as there is more daylight now and we will be able to use some of the trails away from the road.

Sunday’s report from the long trail run group follows! Written by Jen.
I'm writing up a rather brief speedygeese long run report for Sundays run. David Clarke appears to be worn out from writing the last one that involved three individual reports to cover the run.
Plus watching his family doing most of the packing for his recent move was most exhausting for him!!!
Last Sundays speedy geese long run involved practicing leg 1 of the sri chinmoy 104 relay. (Minus the first boring flat part).
After a few logistic hiccups around car transport (created by Dave's last minute decision to meet at the end of the run rather the beginning which destroyed Mhairi's hours and hours of planning as we then didn't account for enough car space for all our bottoms) ...we sorted everything out again and all was going smoothly until - Dave arrived late!!... this however is a regular occurrence...
Mhairi ("Vari" for those struggling with this Scottish name) had accounted for this high probability occurrence and so we still got to Red Hill on time 😊 (and Isaac got a free hot chocolate for Dave's penance)
The run itself went amazingly smoothly. Not one single wrong turn!
Adrian reminded up to stop and enjoy the views (I don't need to be asked twice to stop and rest 😂)
Lots of lovely views too - top of Red Hill, Isaacs ridge and finally Mount Taylor.
Most of us ran around 19k (Kerron, Adrian, Sandeep, Mhairi) ... Narelle rounded up to 20k (potentially Adrian did the same) and Thach ran a huge 36k after running to the start from home and then ran back to home from mount taylor.
Isaac ran approximately 12k - one will never know exactly how far he runs - he rarely uploads to Strava. Apparently put off by some Strava nutters he knows (not sure who this could be - perhaps some school friends ???)
Finally Dave ran 10k - mainly by himself. Supposedly due to sore legs (personally I think he is petrified by the tunnel we had to crawl through to get to Isaacs from Red hill)
Well my run report wasn't so brief after all.
##Special thanks to Dave for his 5 star uber collection of Isaac (Dave maybe a good opportunity to provide your mobile now to potential clients while you have this 5 ⭐️ rating -just in case it doesn't last... when a few disgruntled clients get a lovely tour of Canberra rather than the 10 minute trip they envisioned due to a small amount of "exploring" from you)
And for Tim Craig who provided us with a lovely big smile at the end of the run and gave anyone who needed a lift back to Red hill and super big thank you!!

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 with No comments
Thursday 10 August: At Parliament House, present were Isaac, Jen, Jennie, Giles, Brownie, Susan, Brendan and I. We ran a 1200m fast, followed by 15 minutes or so of intervals on the grass oval (200m fast/slow)

On Sunday 13 August I managed to run 8k unaccompanied at Stromlo Forest Park.

Also on Sunday 13 August the distance group reported: [Bron] At 8:03 Mhairi spun her wheels into the CISAC carpark. At 8:04 14 of us headed out. The beginning of the run took us up a walking path, with a round about which confused poor Giles, having him think he had taken a wrong turn 300m in to our run. We all reconnected and trudged up to the top of Gossan Hill to the pyramid of rocks.
After that we took an unofficial shortcut along Radford Trails to Heydon Drive. A quick game of frogger across the VERY busy Canberra road took us to the Calvary walking track and beyond.
Running past the AIS track (cause this was a long slow run, not track work) we headed to the perimeter of Bruce ridge and made it to O'Conner Ridge. A long loop on a mix of fire trails and single track, with some hills, took us back to Bruce Ridge. Susan took her leave at this point and made her way back to CISAC, likely to have finished up with 12-13km.
The remaining 13 headed around Bruce Ridge, past the caravan park and onto Belconnen Way for some more Frogger fun.
A couple of loops, hills and cross country bush bashing around Little Black Mountain and we were all on the home stretch.
Aranda, with its hills and power lines made sure those who can run downhill quickly caught up to our speedier geese! 😂
A run over the footbridge over Belconnen Way put us on a path back to CISAC and gave us all 22-23km all up. 500m vert.

Finally on Monday 14 August
at Parliament House, Bronwyn and I ran an early 10k, then I supervised a session of 2 x 400m along the western grass followed by about 10 x 200m intervals on the small oval. Participating were Paul, Kym, Pieta, Sandeep and Rae.

Bronwyn and I running early at Monday's speedygeese.

talk, please

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, August 14, 2017 with No comments
Song of the week: "Talk", by Coldplay. At https://youtu.be/EH9meoWmAOM

Sensational lyrics, more relevant today than when it was written.

Oh brother I can't, I can't get through
I’ve been trying hard to reach you cause I don’t know what to do
Oh brother I can't believe it's true
I’m so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you
Oh I wanna talk to you

You can take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or a write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done

Are you lost or incomplete?
Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece?
Tell me how do you feel
Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak
And they're talking it to me

You can take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or a write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done

So you don't know where you're going and you wanna talk
And you feel like you're going where you've been before
You tell anyone who'll listen but you feel ignored
Nothing's really making any sense at all, let's talk
Let's talk, let's talk, let's talk
